Safety First: Electrical Tips for the Workplace

Are your employees current with their electrical safety habits?

Do you have plugs that are missing the grounding prong? Don't use them until the ground is replaced. Grounding prongs are essential for safely operating tools and equipment. If it had a ground, it needs a ground.

Do you follow all lockout tag out procedures? These procedures are in place to reduce the risk of working with dangerous equipment. Improve safety by announcing a shutoff, identifying and isolating energy sources, locking and tagging the energy sources, and confirming that the equipment has been properly isolated.

Do you always wear your personal protective equipment (PPE)? It's there for a reason. Yes, it can be hot and uncomfortable, but you can avoid serious injury or death by making PPE a priority every time you go to work.

How often is your electrically powered equipment inspected? Make it a habit to inspect all equipment and machinery before use. Frayed wires, loose fasteners and any number of easily fixed issues can lead to injury or death if ignored.

Do you have electrical cords running under a rug or carpet? It may seem safer to prevent tripping, but it's a major fire hazard. Invest in a properly rated plastic floor cover to prevent tripping and avoid fires.

Taking the proper precautions, following all safety procedures and staying focused on the job will help you avoid injuries and damage to your property. If you put safety first, you're much more likely to have a happy ending.
